Webinar Description

In this Webinar, Anny Cazenave, Science leader of the ESA CCI Sea Level project, led an engaging session on 18 March 2026 on how satellite data can be used to retrieve observations of sea level changes. Anny is emeritus scientist at the ‘Laboratoire d’Etudes en Géophysique et Océanographie Spatiale’, University of Toulouse, France.

The webinar highlighted global, regional, and local sea level rise; described the data processing and retrieval algorithms used to generate satellite-derived Essential Climate Variables (ECVs); and examined the causes of sea level rise, namely ocean warming and land ice melt, and their links to anthropogenic climate change. It also noted that additional coastal factors (e.g., ground subsidence) can amplify sea level rise and discussed future scenarios and their potential impacts on coastal areas.
