Visualising Forests in a Changing Climate: An ESA CCI Data Challenge
Training Description
This webinar introduces the European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative (CCI) and explains how satellite-based datasets support research, analysis, and communication on climate impacts.
The session shows how to access and visualise CCI satellite data records using the CCI Toolbox and the JupyterLab environment.
The step-by-step demonstration of the Jupyter Notebook includes:
- Accessing and exploring CCI datasets using the ESA Climate Toolbox
- Creating regional and temporal subsets of ECVs
- Loading and visualising above-ground biomass data
- Defining regions of interest, such as parts of the Amazon, northern Bolivia, and Altamira in Brazil
- Generating plots and simple animations to track biomass change over time
The session highlights the ESA CCI Data Visualisation Competition - Forests in a Changing Climate, which invites participants to explore ESA CCI datasets and create engaging visualisations that tell the story of how forests are changing in response to climate change. It also provides an overview of the guidlines, and includes a presentation on effective science communication and storytelling, demonstrating how to present climate data in a clear and engaging way.

Training Materials
The Jupyter Notebook is available in read-only format on GitHub. To interact with or modify the content, you can fork the repository or download the notebooks to your local environment.
You can also access the Notebook from the CCI Toolbox, following the steps in the video.
