SBSTA Earth Information Day 2020

Progress towards ECV development presented by the ESA Climate Change Initiative

Science Leaders from ESA’s Climate Change Initiative presented recent R&D progress towards developing a suite of global satellite data products at the UNFCCC SBSTA Earth Information day [30 Nov].

Earth Information Day provides an update on the state of the global climate in 2020 and recent advances in Earth observation technology and data processing to support decision making.

The four CCI posters (see below - with audio) presented scientific highlights and advances in the generation and use of time series for 21 GCOS-defined Essential Climate Variables spanning the atmosphere, ocean, terrestrial and cryosphere domains. These observational datasets are important for characterising key aspects of the climate, as defined by GCOS, and by evaluating models and underpinning climate services, they are fundamental for climate mitigation and adaptation decision-making.

Detailed information regarding the 23 science projects dedicated to developing datasets for specific Essential Climate Variables are available.
