Harnessing Earth Observation data across the satellite era to assess the state of the ocean
Seminar Description
This seminar, presented by Dr Gemma Kulk and Prof. Shubha Sathyendranath from Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) and hosted by Amina Maroini from Imperative Space at the 2025 UN Ocean Conference (UNOC), explored how satellite data from ESA’s Climate Change Initiative (CCI) is advancing our understanding of ocean health. The session examined trends such as rising sea surface temperatures, increased ocean carbon uptake, and sea level rise since the 1990s. It also highlighted the role of phytoplankton in the carbon cycle and emerging applications for monitoring marine tipping points and impacts on fisheries.
Key Discussion Points :
- Overview of Oceanic ECVs
- The Ocean's Role in Climate System
- Importance of High-Quality Observations and CCI Data
- Physical State of the Ocean: Sea Surface Temperature and Salinity
- Sea Ice and Sea Level Changes
- Biological State of the Ocean: Ocean Colour and Phytoplankton
- Ocean Carbon Cycle and Emerging Applications
- Discussion and Q&A Session
