This month's webinar:

Sea level rise and climate change: Insights from CCI data

Date: 18 March 2026

Time: 16:00 - 17:00 CET

Join Anny Cazenave on March 18th for an insightful webinar on how satellite data can be used to retrieve observations of sea level changes. She is emeritus scientist at the ‘Laboratoire d’Etudes en Géophysique et Océanographie Spatiale’, University of Toulouse, France. Her research deals with the applications of space techniques to Earth sciences. She served as Lead Author for the sea level chapters of the 4th and 5th assessment reports of the IPCC and is a member of the French Academy of sciences and of five foreign academies of sciences.

This webinar will focus on the ESA Change Change Initiative (CCI) Sea Level project. The ESA CCI is a major research effort that generates global, decades-long satellite data records to track and understand key aspects of the Earth's climate system, known as Essential Climate Variables (ECVs).

The webinar will:

  • Highlight how much sea level is rising globally, regionally and locally
  • Explain specific data processing or retrieval algorithms to generate satellite-derived ECVs.
  • Explain the causes of sea level rise (ocean warming and land ice melt) and their link with anthropogenic climate change
  • Explain that at the coast other factors (e.g., ground subsidence) can amplify the climate-related sea level rise
  • Discuss possible scenarios of future sea level rise and their coastal impacts
