Kick-off of the new phase of Fire_cci

Two-day meeting at University of Alcala, Spain to plan next phase

The new phase of Fire_cci was successfully kicked-off on 4-5 April 2019, with a two-day meeting at the University of Alcala, Spain. During the meeting, the partners of the project discussed the previous work done during the last three years of the Fire_cci project, and organised the tasks to perform during the next phase.

The main objectives of this new phase are to develop a coarse-resolution burned area (BA) algorithm based on Sentinel-3 SYN data, based on the existing MODIS algorithm, to review and improve the BA algorithms developed for AVHRR-LTDR and Sentinel-1 data, and to assess merging techniques to produce BA products based on both merged reflectance, and merged outputs from individual sensors. Complementary, two existing BA products will be extended: FireCCI51 (based on MODIS 250m data) will be extended to the year 2018, and also the FireCCISFD product, based on Sentinel-2, will be produced for 2018 using both S2 satellite information.

We are also very happy to welcome our new partners to the project: Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain) and the National Research Council of Italy.
