RECCAP2 CS focuses on four key regions where land carbon dynamics are critical. In Europe, intensively managed forests and inland waters reveal changing carbon sinks driven by harvest, drought, and natural disturbances. The Amazon rainforest stores massive carbon stocks but faces high emissions from deforestation, fires, and forest degradation. Siberian boreal forests are experiencing rapid warming and increased harvesting, affecting both biomass and soil carbon. In the Arctic, permafrost peatlands hold vast long-term carbon reserves that are increasingly vulnerable to thaw, fires, and methane emissions.
